Diabetes Education (Part 2) BUSTED!
Well kiddies it would seem my body isn't interested in learning. Yep...I ended up in the E.R again but this time they kept me over night. I have never stayed in a hospital ever in my life! Okay this is what went down.  I got there pretty early so I can get settled in and stay in a relaxed mood. They came down to admitting to wheel me to class. I was the first one in class so I got to set up my laptop and my other junk to be ready for class. It was nice and quiet and relaxing. I felt positive minded and was ready to learn. Just like last time… I sat there listening to the instructors and I started to feel nauseous and light headed. I ask to be excused and one of the teachers (Carol) walked me to the men’s room. I wobbled me way into the bathroom and saw a chair. I sat down then decided I would need to lay on the floor and prop my feet up on the chair to get the blood back to my head and to even out my blood flow. Carol came in after a few minutes and saw me on the floor and called for help. My face went pale and pasty but I was still somewhat awake and thinking fairly clear. They check my blood sugars and my blood pressure and found it was normal. Of course I was lying down so I was pretty sure my B.P would read okay. My B.S however was still high. After a few more minutes I started to get color back in my face and I was feeling much better. I wobbled back to class feeling like I would be okay. However… 5 minutes after returning to class I got sick yet again. This time they helped me on the floor and propped my feet up. Next thing I knew… the classroom was filled with people and they had moved all the tables and chairs to one side of the room. The other students were around me holding my head up and wiping my face and neck with cold paper towels. At that time I knew what was going on but at the same time I did not recall how it all started. By the time they got me on this (stretcher? )I was more alert but fuzzy headed and like last time my eyes were sensitive to the lights. The E.R attending  said to me since this is the second time I have nearly passed out they had to keep me overnight. They put a heart monitor on me to check for whatever they were looking for. After about 3 hours in the E.R they got me a room. It was a big room too. I had it all to myself. During the next 24 hours or so… they did numerous of tests and constant B.P and B.S checks the whole time. I had a MRI, Heart scan and they scanned my neck area. They kept the heart monitor on me the whole time which was not as awkward as I thought it would be. The food they served me was based on a Diabetic diet so… let’s just say it wasn't too bad but…it was no Pizza that’s for sure! As boring as it was to be stuck there I really enjoyed talking to the staff. The housekeeper Stella was adorable and so sweet. I wish I could see her again but not in the hospital. She was fun. She was also a Diabetic which I saw as a opportunity to learn something. We chatted about the ups and downs of Diabetes and foods and just life in general. I truly enjoy her visit.
Moving on…after they were done with the tests and scans I was released. The very good looking Doctor came in with my results and told me they could not find anything wrong with my heart or any blockage. I was thrilled to hear that but I still did not know what was going on with my body. He suggests the Invokana may have something to do with it but I'm not really sure. He told me that for some reason when I stand up I’m not getting blood flow to my head fast enough. He told me to cross my feet and squeeze hard before I stand up. He said this would force the blood upwards a bit faster. So now when I feel clammy and woozy... I do this little trick the handsome doctor taught me.
Oh yes… Chris and Carol (Diabetes Educators) made a few stops by my room to check up on me and to try to teach me what they could in the short time they had. They are truly supportive human beings. I believe even if I did not know them or have ever met them…and I got sick somewhere they may happen to be... they would have jumped in to help me. I don't think that way about many people. Very few in fact do. These two impressed me. I thank them and the staff at W.F.H for all the help and support during my stay.
My next move is to call my doctor to set up a follow up appointment and see what is going to be next. I guess my attempt to educate myself on Diabetes turned out to be an epic BUST but I am not willing to give up. This Fat dude is going to fight as hard as I can. Have a great weekend all!
